The Five Musts of Managing Data
07/25/2024
The tremendous volume of data that is collected by agricultural operations is worthless without astute analysis that leads to wise decisions. In a recent post on the Dairy Herd Management website ( www.dairyherd.com ) by Taylor Leach, the author shares five “musts” of managing data.
As agricultural consultants, we are often asked to help clients analyze data so they can utilize this important information to improve production, reduce costs, enhance efficiency, modify inputs and ensure the health of their livestock.
Dairy operations are no exception. Adam Griffin, Proposition Manager for Digital Farming at Lely North America, provides these tips when it comes to managing metrics on the farm:
1. Do Your Homework—Study the pros and cons of different systems, talk to current users and work with consultants to ensure you are choosing the best system for your specific needs.
2. Have Good Wi-Fi—Almost all systems rely on cloud storage. Without reliable internet access your information cannot be retrieved, nor will mobile apps be usable.
3. Keep Up with the Updates—These are like regular maintenance of common farm equipment. If you don’t do important maintenance procedures, there can be significant downtime.
4. Backup Your Storage—You never know when a piece of technology will go down, so keeping your data available is essential. And the amount of data today is not something to take lightly.
5. Keep Data Secure—Like storage, the security of your data is essential. Online storage is common and easy to access, but also exposes it to risks.
