ASAC Shop Talk—Your Ag Consultant’s Toolbox

Russell Morgan, ASAC Board Member and long-time ag financial consultant, facilitated a discussion on The Ag Consultant’s Toolbox as a part of ASAC’s ongoing series of Shop Talk webinars. These webinars are designed to help ag consultants share ideas on how they run their business, tools they use to improve efficiency and performance, and offer assistance to individuals who have recently started their own consulting practice.
Russell provided a brief overview of the discussion topics including: hardware and software upgrades and ideas; new strategies and methodologies; soft and hard working alliances and anything else that the participants wanted to discuss.
Several upgrades and options for hardware were shared that included simple handheld counters to do appraisals and assessments of inventory, and fold-out monitors that attach to your laptop that are compact enough for air travel yet provide that coveted monitor width we are accustomed to using the office.
Software ideas included phone apps that allow you to create unique phone numbers for key clients (the Burner app), time tracking software (timesheets.com and Quickbookstime), and an inexpensive yet comprehensive online CRM (Pipedrive.com). Other options are available for all these categories, although these are the ones that the participants were familiar with and found useful.
The value of being a member of an association of like-minded professionals concluded the discussion, with one new consultant expressing the insights she gained from access to other consultants. ASAC members can easily search for advisors with specialties in any field of agriculture as well as unique areas of expertise.
