Updated Core Principles for Ag Data—Todd Janzen
05/17/2024

In a May 2 Swineweb blog, Todd Janzen, President of Janzen Shroeder Agricultural Law LLC, provides an update to the 2014 Privacy and Security Principles for Farm Data. These principles were established to provide guidance on the collection, use and sharing of agricultural data from farmers.
From his blog, Janzen writes, “The evolution of precision agriculture and collection of agricultural data is providing farmers with tools to increase productivity and profitability. These core principles were originally developed by farmers, commodity organizations, and ag technology providers in 2014. The Ag Data Transparent (ADT) organization has updated these core principles to guide agricultural technology providers with how best to approach collection, use and sharing of agricultural data from farmers.”

“For the purpose of these principles, “Providers” means those companies that intend to collect, use, or share ag data from farmers. “Farmers” means those persons and organizations engaged in growing crops, raising livestock, and producing food, fiber, or fuel products. Farmers include growers, ranchers, and producers. “Members” means organizations and companies that support the ADT and align with its mission.  Although not mandatory, members of the ADT should strive to incorporate these core principles into their contracts with farmers.”

He then outlines the updates made in several areas, including Farmer Education, Simple Contracts, Ownership and Control, Collection, Notice of Changes, Transparency, Choice, Portability, and a host of other areas that help ag data users know what data is being collected, how it is being used and how it is shared.

The ADT certification has been achieved by over 40 companies.

It is good to know that during this era where the privacy and protection of data, as well as the individual’s ability to control its uses, is being monitored by this group and that companies are pledging to follow their standards.
