Don Lamb and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture
03/20/2025

State departments of agriculture play an essential role in promoting their agricultural producers, products, management and development. From the Indiana State Department of Agriculture’s website, “ISDA was established as a state agency by the Legislature in 2005. ISDA reports to the Lt. Governor, who also serves as Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. Major responsibilities include advocacy for Indiana agriculture at the local, state and federal level, managing soil conservation programs, promoting economic development and agricultural innovation, serving as a regulatory ombudsman for agricultural businesses, and licensing grain firms throughout the state.”

The ISDA Vision states, “Indiana agriculture will be a global leader in innovation and commercialization for food, fuel and fiber production.”

Don Lamb is the Director of ISDA and heads up their leadership team for several strategic initiatives including outreach, regulatory coordination, policy development, environmental stewardship, and economic opportunities for hardwoods, entrepreneurship, livestock, international trade and bioenergy initiatives.

Don is a second-generation farmer for Lamb Farms in Boone County, Indiana where, alongside his father, brother, and nephews, they produce corn, popcorn, seed soybeans and seed wheat. They also own two other enterprises, including AgRecycle which is a composting business and Lamb Farms Agronomy which provides neighboring farmers with agronomy products and services. Don stays involved in management aspects of the farm and joins in operations whenever he can.

Don is a 1989 graduate of Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics. While at Purdue he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Don is a member of class 8 of the Indiana Agriculture Leadership Program (ALP) and he credits the ALP program for instilling a desire to lead the agriculture industry forward. In September of 2023 Don was selected as an At-Large member for board of directors for the National State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA).

In 2012 Don’s family farm started Agristewards, a nonprofit which teaches farming practices and subsistence farmers in Africa, Asia, the Caribbeans and Central America. Don and his wife Jodie have four daughters and three grandchildren. The family loves to do agricultural mission work where Don has traveled to Uganda, Kenya, Jamaica, and multiple times to Panama, Costa Rica and Haiti.

Don Lamb will speak at the 2025 ASAC Annual Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana in November. It will be a privilege to hear about Indiana’s unique blend of agricultural products, range of production capabilities, and the areas where Indiana agriculture is a leader in ag production.
