Brian Furrer and BioTownAg: Sustainability for the Real World
05/21/2025
One family farm in the heart of the Midwest is developing solutions as big as the challenge of sustainability. BioTownAg (
www.biotownag.com ) is a second-generation farming operation in Indiana that uses livestock manure and other waste products to produce 120 Megawatt-hours of renewable electricity every day, which is enough to power 5000 homes. It also produces natural gas that is shipped to states with low-carbon fuel standards.
The operation also saves 200,000 tons of CO2 emissions, 128,000 tons of landfill waste and 36.5 million gallons of wastewater every year. The system is a full cycle, closed loop process that receives a variety of inputs that are converted to several different products.
Waste materials and livestock manure enter an anaerobic digester that creates methane gas that is converted to electricity, natural gas and natural fertilizers. Waste products from the digester are applied as fertilizer for crop production.
BioTownAg has a variety of their own brands for their products, such as Legacy Maker Beef ™ and BioTown BioGas.
