Will Rural America Accept Microreactors?
09/17/2025

In a recent post on his Jenzen Ag Tech Blog site, Todd Janzen shared his thoughts on the challenges of rural communities accepting the installation of nuclear microreactors in their neighborhoods. As an attorney specializing in agricultural law, Janzen has helped farmers and rural communities navigate the adoption of all types of renewable energy projects as another commodity they produce on their local farms.
He provides brief explanations of what these reactors are, their basic construction and power generation, and the challenges in their development and installation that are still being worked out.

Janzen then explains that in his experience, the response to new technologies, “…often begins as positive, welcoming the new jobs and tax base increases, attitudes often swing to negative, creating divisive local politics.  Planning and zoning officials may then scramble to appease the pro- and anti-[Insert new technology here] factions.”

He sees microreactors as even more controversial than the current suite of renewable energy projects, especially when a solar field is compared to a nuclear reactor.
