At the Conference: Kendell Culp and Indiana’s Distinctive Agricultural Production
12/04/2025
During the recent ASAC Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, Kendell Culp, the Vice President of Indiana Farm Bureau provided a comprehensive overview of the wide variety of agricultural products, as well as the surprising areas where Indiana’s ag production is first in the nation.
He began with a general overview of Indiana’s ag statistics. The average farm size is 272 acres, 94% are family owned, and the average age of farmers is 56. Indiana’s agricultural production creates $35.1 billion in revenue for the state.
What most don’t know about Indiana’s ag production is that Indiana is number one in the country in the production of ducks, popcorn, hardwood veneer and gourds. They are number two in pumpkins, tomatoes for processing and wood cabinets. They are also in the top 5 producers of corn, soybeans, turkeys, peppermint, prefab wood buildings, hogs and watermelons. It’s a very diverse state!
Along with this direct ag production, many large ag companies have their national and international headquarters in Indiana. Red Gold Tomatoes, Maple Leaf Ducks, Beck’s Hybrids (seed genetics), Rose Acre Farms (eggs), Corteva, Elanco, Eli Lilly as well as others choose to make Indiana their home base for operations.
Mr. Culp cited farmland protection, property rights, generational farms and ag labor as key policy issues for the state, as well as water rights, power generation and property taxes.
As a life-long farmer in the state as well as many years as a state legislator, Kendell sees these issues from all perspectives and works diligently to advocate for farmer’s rights and agriculture as a whole. His voice for agriculture is based on a keen knowledge of the issues and a passion for what is best for Indiana farmers. It was a pleasure to have him speak to this group of ag consultants from across the country.
